Clubs

East Lee Middle School offers students the opportunities to acquire new abilities, engage in self-expression, develop leadership skills, share and develop interests, be a part of a group/team, and provide service to the community through our clubs.

Clubs are important in school for several reasons. Firstly, clubs provide a platform for students to explore their interests and hobbies outside of the academic curriculum. By offering a range of clubs and activities, schools can cater to the diverse interests of their students and provide opportunities for every student to engage in extracurricular activities that appeal to them.

Secondly, clubs help to enhance the social and emotional development of students by fostering a sense of community and belonging. Students who participate in clubs can build strong friendships with others who share similar interests, develop social skills, and gain confidence through the support of their peers.

Thirdly, clubs offer opportunities for students to develop a range of skills, such as leadership, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. These skills are essential for success in all aspects of life, and clubs provide a safe and supportive environment where students can practice and develop these skills.

Finally, clubs can also help students prepare for future careers by providing exposure to different industries and exploring potential areas of interest. Clubs can also provide opportunities for networking and building professional connections.

AVID

What is AVID?

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a global nonprofit organization that operates with one guiding principle: Hold students accountable to the highest standards, provide academic and social support, and they will rise to the challenge. AVID’s kindergarten through higher education system brings research-based curriculum and strategies to students each day that develop critical thinking, literacy, and math skills across all content areas.

AVID Elective

AVID Secondary starts with an elective class for one period a day, where students learn organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking and asking probing questions, get academic help from peers and college tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make college seem attainable.

English as a Second Language

The English as a second language (ESL) program provides academic and social English language instruction in speaking, listening, reading and writing to English learners (ELs) in grades K-12. ESL instruction integrates the topics, and vocabulary from the North Carolina Standard Course of Study in social studies and science, mathematics and language arts with the language functions of the North Carolina English Language Proficiency Standard Course of Study in order for students to achieve social and academic proficiency in the English language. The program supports all teachers' efforts to differentiate instruction in order to best meet the needs of these students. Some of the goals of the ESL program in Lee County include:

  • Closing achievement gaps for students identified as English learners (EL).

  • Providing appropriate, equitable services and opportunities to all English learners and their families.

  • Increasing family involvement for culturally and linguistically diverse students.

  • Providing high quality professional development on strategies and effective models of instruction for English learners
